Israel’s Destiny: Their Messiah Jesus

The Sad Present
Present-day Israel is blind. This according to the apostle Paul in Romans 11:25. What is Israel (the world’s Jewish population) blind to? Israel is spiritually blinded as to the identity of her Messiah, the Lord Jesus Christ. To the unsaved Jewish people, Jesus may have been a good man and wise teacher, but He’s no Messiah.
This rejection of Jesus has led to heartache for the Jewish people throughout the centuries, a legacy of satanically-provoked persecution which has periodically led to the ravaging of the Jewish population.
But soon, Israel’s legacy of heartache and persecution will be transformed into one of joy and blessing when the Jewish people embrace and accept their destiny: their Messiah Jesus.
Israel’s Rejection of Jesus Chronicled
It was a gut-wrenching moment for Jesus as He stood beyond the gates of Jerusalem. He had had a long day of preaching, teaching, and confrontation with the Jewish leadership. But as he looked to Jerusalem, his heart was breaking: His brothers and sisters in the flesh were on the verge of rejecting His claim of Messiahship; they would not accept His call for them to repent and turn to Him for forgiveness. In the anguish of his heart, he lamented:
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, just as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not have it! Behold, your house is left to you desolate; and I say to you, you will not see Me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’” (Luke 13:34-35).
No, the Jewish people were not ready to accept Jesus, but, as Jesus duly noted, there will be a time when they will (“until the time comes”).
A very short time later, Israel would confirm Jesus’ words. While Jesus was on trial, the Roman procurator Pontius Pilate asked the Jewish leadership, “Shall I crucify your King?” They responded, “We have no king but Caesar” (John 19:15). Then, once the decision was made to crucify Jesus, Pilate exclaimed, “I am innocent of this Man’s blood; see to that yourselves.” The tragic reply came back: “AND ALL THE PEOPLE said, ‘His blood shall be on us and on our children!’” (Matthew 27:24-25, emphasis added). Most scholars believe these two proclamations by the Jewish people were their official rejection of Christ.
The repercussions from this rejection have profoundly, tragically, and devastatingly haunted the Jewish people for almost 2,000 years.
God’s Protective Hand
Yet, despite the consequences experienced by Israel for her rejection of Christ, never for a second has God turned her back on His beloved Jewish people. Yes, He has severely disciplined her, but He has also protected and preserved her. In numerous instances throughout the Old Testament He has promised to bless and restore her, and He will do precisely that.
Miraculously, in 1948, God resurrected Israel as a nation, and over the decades He has been slowly gathering more and more of worldwide Jewry back to the land of Israel. However, according to the “Valley of Dry Bones” vision in Ezekiel 37, Israel is there physically, but not spiritually. For the most part, the Jews are a people who either have no regard for God, or worship Him according to works, not faith.
Israel’s Reconciliation to God
Rough days await Israel, particularly during “Daniel’s 70th week” (Daniel 9:24-27), the final seven years of this era of human history. But when these days end, Israel, on the brink of extinction, will finally look to her Messiah. Zechariah 12:10 says:
I [God the Father] will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me [Jesus the Son] whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him like the bitter weeping over a firstborn.
This will mark the moment of reconciliation between Israel and her Messiah.
It will also be at this moment when the Jewish people who survive the ravages the Antichrist at the end of the age will become a people spiritually. For God himself …
“… will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt … this is the covenant which I will make … I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people” (Jeremiah 31:31-33).
This will usher in the Millennial (1,000-year) Kingdom, where Christ will rule the world from Jerusalem: “At that time Jerusalem shall be called the throne of the Lord, and all nations shall gather to it, to the presence of the Lord in Jerusalem, and they shall no more stubbornly follow their own evil heart” (Jeremiah 3:17).
It will be a time of blessing beyond imagination for Israel, a time of glory and joy for the Jewish people, a time when God’s Chosen People will at last embrace their destiny: their Messiah Jesus!
